About the Network

Welcome to the Dutch Higher Education Network, a collaborative platform dedicated to promoting public and private institutions delivering university-level programs across the Kingdom of the Netherlands, encompassing the European Netherlands and its Caribbean territories: Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten, and the special municipalities of Bonaire, Saba, and Sint Eustatius.

This network features over 50 institutions, from world-renowned research universities to specialized professional schools, fostering global access to innovative, high-quality education for students seeking cutting-edge research opportunities or institutions looking to partner, highlighting the diversity and excellence of Dutch higher education delivered in and from the Kingdom.

The story of higher education in the Netherlands is deeply intertwined with the nation’s history of innovation, independence, and intellectual freedom, emerging during the Golden Age with the first university, Leiden University, founded in 1575 by William of Orange as a gift to the city of Leiden for its resistance during the Eighty Years’ War against Spanish rule, marking the beginning of a tradition promoting liberty of thought and scientific advancement, followed by institutions like the University of Groningen (1614) and the University of Amsterdam (1632) born from the struggle for independence, evolving by the 19th century into today’s dual structure of research universities (universiteiten) focused on academic pursuits and universities of applied sciences (hogescholen) emphasizing practical training, while in the Dutch Caribbean, higher education developed later with roots like the University of Curaçao in 1979, the University of Aruba in 1988, and the University of St. Martin in 1989 to serve regional needs, creating a resilient ecosystem blending tradition with modernity and extending Dutch educational values of openness and excellence.

Dutch universities enjoy an outstanding global reputation, consistently ranking among the world’s best for research output, innovation, and international collaboration, with 13 universities in the top 200 of the 2025 QS World University Rankings, including Delft University of Technology at 47th and the University of Amsterdam at 53rd, Times Higher Education highlighting strengths in engineering, life sciences, and social sciences, and Wageningen University & Research ranking first worldwide in agriculture and forestry, stemming from a commitment to high-quality, research-driven education with over 2,000 English-taught programs attracting students from 160+ countries, where public institutions like Utrecht and Leiden excel in interdisciplinary research, private ones like Nyenrode and TIAS in executive education, and Caribbean private medical schools like the American University of the Caribbean and Saba University gaining international recognition, praised for affordability, student-centered approaches, and contributions to fields like water management, AI, and climate science, making it a top choice for ambitious learners worldwide.
